NDT according to ISO 9712 - Methods

Certification Target Groups
EN ISO 9712 certification was developed for all non-destructive testing personnel. It is up to the manufacturer or facility operator to ensure their staff have the professional competence. Certification according to this international standard is mandatory when required by a product or legislative regulation.
Methods and sectors
TÜV NORD Czech provides certification of non-destructive testing personnel according to EN ISO 9712 and approval for specified personnel conducting particular non-destructive tests on pressure equipment in Categories III and IV according to directive 2014/68/EU in Levels 1, 2 and 3 in following methods and sectors:
- AT – Acoustic Emission Testing
- RT – Radiographic Testing
- UT – Ultrasonic Testing
- MT – Magnetic Testing
- PT – Penetrant Testing
- VT – Visual Testing
- ET – Eddy Current Testing
- LT – Leak Testing
Product Sectors:
- c – castings
- f – forgings
- w – welded products
- t – tubes and pipes, including flat products for the manufacture of welded tubes
- wp – wrought products
- dsw – direct visual weld examination (dsw product sector is limited only to Level 2 and includes only direct visual weld examination)
Industrial Sectors:
- MM – Metal Manufacturing, with an exception of weld examination (product sectors c, f, t, wp)
- PV – Manufacture and Construction of Equipment (product sectors w, t, wp)
- MS – Multisector, including all activities (product sectors c, f, w, t, wp)
How to obtain the EN ISO 9712 certificate
- Submit an application for training in one of our training centres
- Receive the training in the method, level and sector concerned
- Complete a compulsory practical experience under the supervision of a qualified person
- Check visual acuity
- Submit an application for a qualification examination in one of our examination centres
- Pass a qualification examination in the method, level and sector concerned
- Complete a remaining compulsory practical experience under the supervision of a qualified person
- Submit an application for certification (download a current application form here)
- Award of a certificate in the method, level and sector concerned

- Duration of training is conditioned by qualification in RT method, level 2 and particular industrial / product sector.

- The minimum required portion of practical training hours is 40% from total training hours.
- Teaching hour shall be 45 min. as minimum.
- One day duration of training is based on 8 hours lesson; however, one-day duration shall not be less than 7. hours.
Candidates for certification must have completed industrial practical experience. The minimum length of practical experience in order to satisfy EN ISO 9712 criteria and Table 2

Notes:
One day duration is at least 7 hours, which can be achieved on a single day or by accumulating hours. The maximum allowable hours in any one day is 12 hours. Experience in days is achieved by dividing the total accumulated hours by 7.
Vision requirements
The applicant must provide written evidence (the form is part of the certification application) of a satisfactory visual acuity carried out within the last 12 months (EN ISO 9712) with data on near vision acuity enabling reading at least Jaeger No. 1 or Times New Roman 4.5 or an equivalent font (having a font height of 1.6 mm) from a distance of min. 30 cm with one or both eyes, uncorrected or with correction or near vision according to EN ISO 18490. Sufficient distinguishing between colors or shades of gray used in NDT methods / techniques as determined by the employer, min. 1x in five years.
Visual requirements must be documented prior to passing the qualification examination.

A candidate must pass the qualification examination at one of the approved examination centres listed above.

Notes:
- To be eligible for certification in Level 3 of all NDT methods, the candidate shall successfully pass the practical examination for Level 2 in the relevant sector and method, except for the design of NDT instructions for the Level. A candidate who is Level 2 certified in the same NDT method and product sector or has successfully passed a Level 2 practical examination in an industrial sector, is exempt from a new Level 2 practical examination.
To be eligible for certification, the candidate shall obtain a minimum grade of 70%, in each part of the examination. In addition, for the practical examination, a minimum grade of 70% shall be obtained for each specimen, instruction or procedure tested. If a candidate meets the scope and subject of training and successfully passes the qualification examination, he/she can apply for the issuance of the Competency certificate/wallet card.
Candidates for certification shall submit the following supporting documents:
- 1 pcs of photography in passport format (in case a wallet card certificate is required)
- copy of highest education certificate (required only in case of applying for certification in level 3 or in case of applying for number of training days requirement reduction)
- documents proving attendance at NDT trainings (unless these had already been submitted by COP examination center)
- certificates on qualification examinations (unless these had already been submitted by COP examination center)
- certificate of vision acuity (not older than one year)
- certificates (not required for initial certification)
- proof of industrial experience in NDT methods/techniques
- agreement with processing of personal data (part of the application)
